After the rebirth of DDO and it suddenly becoming profitable again for Turbine, I’ve been waiting for other struggling A+ mmo’s would suit. I figured the next FTP conversion would be Warhammer, but seeing how they already have experience in the field it’s not totally surprising that Turbine decided to convert another one of their games first.
I didn’t think LOTR was having problems, but then again they might have just decided to do this in order to increase profitability by offering an alternate subscription model alongside their traditional monthly sub. This is sure to draw more people to the game who wouldn’t have given it a shot before, increase server populations and to inject capital into the investor’s pockets which would justify making more content for the game.
The reason I think this will work is because like DDO they still have a “VIP” standard subscription like normal mmo’s which get access to everything for free. The FTP model works alongside it for those who would rather do that route, and they have to pay for access to the shit the sub players have access to automatically. Simply put, the more payment options you make available for a product the easier you make it for people to spend their money.
DDO’s revenue has jumped way beyond what they had before and since they adopted the FTP/Sub model; they now actually have more regular subscriptions then they had before they has a FTP option. If they can create that same magic again with LOTOR expect to see this in almost every mmo. I bet some of the major players are already working on something like this.
