Because we need a thread for this event.

Who watched the games today? And who do you think will take home the world cup? =)

Spain and Chile are through. Spain will play Portugal on Tuesday, and Chile will take on Brazil.

Highlights of my fav team (Brazil) and Portugal's match today. Was super fun to watch!

World cup?
oh fuck...I just noticed... USA might actually reach the fucking semi-finals... since their 1/8 and the 1/8 next to them are all filled with second rank teams... >.<
The Brazil - Portugal game was a rubbish one to watch, neither side put the effort in as they had both qualified anyway.
Most of the WC games were rubbish, there are a handfull of games that were good to watch imo.

That being said, I think Germany is going to take the cup home.
I'm thinking Germany as well. That's who I'm going to support besides any underdogs like south Korea, Slovakia or Japan and what others there are. As a finn I'll never have to worry about our team reaching the World Cup Tongue
Psh what about Spain and Argentina! They've both been playing very well.
World Cup has been interesting so far, games haven't been exciting, but group games rarely are.

Teams that have impressed so far:

Argentina
Brazil
Portugal
Chile
Uruguay

Teams that have been a little fortunate but can improve:

Germany
Spain
England

Teams that could cause some upset:

USA
South Korea
Japan
Slovakia

I think it's still hard to see past Argentina, Brazil and Spain for the World Cup really, Spain haven't come out of first gear yet, Argentina have the best attacking set up in the cup, Brazil are always going to do well.

Germany have a tricky route to the final, and so have England since they now have to play each other, as an England fan (Obviously) I think it will be an intriguing game, both teams have a barely friendly rivallry that goes back years, both teams will be fired up for the game.

My opinion on England is thus:

A team that when it workd, and we play tpo our strnegths is capable of beating anyone, with Rooney and Defoe up front there is a strike partnership that can only be matched by Span (Torres and Villa) but both are confidence players, and Rooney, one of two English World Class payers is low on confidence.

We still have a defence that is strong, but prone to lack of concentration and lacks pace being led by the useless John Terry. No team will get much reward attacking down the right against us since they have to go against Ashley Cole, the best Left Back in the world by a very long distance, shame he's such a cunt as a person, which means we can nullify players like Ronaldo, and to as much extent as any team can, Messi.

In midfield we have talented players, but who struggle to play together since they have completely different roles at club level. Lampard and Gerrard at their club level performances would walk into most teams at the World Cup, but they struggle to play together, and both are played in positions and roles they are unaccustomed to to make them fit into the team. In Joe Cole we have a player with enough flair and technique to make Brazilians hand in their boots, but is a little in-consistent and can be quite selfish.

We have little strength in depth though, defensively we have cover for he central positions, but nothing capable for our full backs. midfield we ahve a bunch of workman-like players who are good at Prem level, but not world shattering, and up front we have Heskey who is impossible to mark and very clever, but can't finish at all, and Crouch who adds nothing to the team when we don't ahve the ball, and tends to force the team into long ball tactics, but has a gola-scoring record that makes any other striker cry in jealousy since he is a master of being in the right place at the right time.

As for our goalkeepers, if we could meld the three we have into one, we'd ahve the best keeper in the world. James has shaken the calamity tag off pretty much now, may be old but hugely experienced, unbelivably good shot-stopper and comamnds the defence very well. Green is good at everything but can be error prone, Hart will be a top World Class keeper in a few years, but lacks experience for now.

Having said that, being a West Brom fan, and therefore pessimistic when it comes to football, Germany will beat us, lose to Argentina, And Argies will go on to win the World Cup, that's my view.
What do you mean "pessimistic when it comes to football"? Tongue
well the dutchies will have it reasonably easy to reach the finals if we get passed brazil in the quarters

i mean we got slovakia in the 1/8ths, then brazil in the quarters and then either; Ghana, USA South korea or urugay in the semis. Big Grin
