Dwarf Fortress
Hahaa! I won't stop posting about this game
.There's a new version of the game coming up in the beginning of April. Among the new stuff is new medical system with very indepth simulation of injuries (surgeries, infections, poisons, nerve damage... etc), the squad system for militaries has been overhauled making for easier control of soldiers, there's detailed appearance section for each individual dwarf (with very large part of it detailing facial hair naturally ) and last but not least the underground features have been remade. One will find much more distinct features underground now (natural caverns, tunnels, underground lakes and rivers, more magma vents and lakes, new underground monsters etc.) and most embark sites should also contain these unlike in previous builds where you had to search through many sites to even find a one with magma. Here's a full list of new features.Dwarf Fortress homesite for more info. |

RE: Dwarf Fortress
Damn... dwarf Fortress really is a thousand times more in depth than anything out there, hands down.
Too bad I can't make my dwarves survive long enough to reach the cool stage

RE: Dwarf Fortress
New version is out! Haven't tried it yet but I hear you can now dig deeper. Much, much deeper. Which means even scarier stuff than before. Someone found a cave complex 50z-levels from ground level. It went on for another 50z-levels. (In the previous version you had roughly 20 underground z-levels to deal with.)

RE: Dwarf Fortress
Yes! You are the best patch ever! My current fortress is just a humble hole in the ground with only 21 dwarves. However, the place is richer in minerals and gems than anything I've ever seen. All I need is to find some magma, although the tremendous amounts of bituminous coal should make up for the lack of magma for now...
Anyway, just to see what lies beneath my fortress I ordered my miners to dig 20 levels downwards. What they found was a huge complex of caverns complete with a large underground lake. So far I don't even know how huge the place is (it needs to be explored first) but I'd vager it's roughly one thirds of the map and 4 or so z-levels deep. The place is full of tower caps and other underground vegetation (tree farms!) as well as cave spider webs for future clothing industry. However...I also noticed giant cave spider webs there as well, which means the caverns is absolutely off-limits before I get a proper army. I hear those things eat civilian dwarves for breakfast and with my luck the place has several of those buggers. The best thing is that I don't even know where they lurk...and what other nasties live down there. Fun (read: deadly) times to be had. *edit* And judging by my list of civilizations, there's probably some tribe of (goddamn) batmen living somewhere down there. |

RE: Dwarf Fortress
Is the new version still very buggy? I'm yet to try it.

RE: Dwarf Fortress
Slightly buggy, I'd say. Far from unplayable though.
Dwarves now keep working, ignoring the need to drink, eat and sleep untill they become absolute necessities. While this does make them more effective workers it does generate some unhappy thoughts, so I assume it's a bug. In order to farm you need irrigate (muddy tiles), no matter where you try to farm. While only a nuisance, it might create some troubles, depending on where you start. Those two are the only notable bugs I can think of right now. A small detail of interest is that immigrants are no longer practically useless. Immigrants with near-legendary skill levels aren't very uncommon any more (not to mention the immigrants with talented-level skills in combat, making them excellent drafts for your army). As of that earlier fort of mine? I stopped playing it after a while because I realized I wanted to do things a bit differently? How come, you might ask. You see, I kept digging even deeper than the 20 z-levels that I reported earlier. I think I went all the down to z-level 100 or so. Anyway, I found two more cavern complexes, complete with that tribe of batmen I spoke of earlier. I also found a sea of magma(!). But guess what happened to that tribe of batmen? A forgotten beast that resembled a giant lizard with antennae and external ribs wandered into the cavern complex and tore them completely apart. Another reason why I didn't want to properly breach into the caves. <.< So, now I started a new fortress with a slightly different approach. I built a very simple outpost for my starter dwarves in the first few layers and then started immediately digging downwards. My previous mistake was to build my fortress too close to the surface so this time I figured I'd build it where the fun is. So...my new fortress is down at z-level 120, between an underground lake and a sea of magma. Who needs the surface, anyway? |

RE: Dwarf Fortress
This sounds interesting. I hate you. ._. You're going to make me spend massive amounts of time learning how to play and then playing that game again. D:
